BOON's relationship with Nga Pekanga te Kohanga Reo began with funding applications and result in a very rewarding transformation of learning spaces.

With a significant expansion in rohe, the Kohanga Reo identified existing buildings at an adjacent Catholic Church for growth. From here, work was completed in two stages.

Stage one – addition to and general refurbishment of, the existing structure, including new kitchen, resource room, admin area, deck, and vital IEQ features such as heating and heat-exchange ventilation systems.

Stage two – following on from the success of stage one and made possible by additional funding secured, was new staff facilities and redesign of outdoor play and learning spaces. We introduced new hard surfaces, relocated play furniture, and improved circulation/movement, including a ‘race track’ for ride-on toys. Fifty children under 5 enclosed within one space requires careful management of internal air quality systems. BOON explored the use of radiant heaters, and heat exchange ventilation to provide a healthy indoor environment, particularly through the cooler months, and with low annual operating costs. Considering the amount of time young children spend in contact with the floor, Marmoleum was selected over traditional vinyl coverings to reduce the release of VOC toxins into the space. This material also allowed for the inclusion of a playful pattern to the floor surface and became the starting point for the overall colour scheme
